Eduardo Oviedo
Pipes, whistles, flute
Eduardo was born in San José, Costa Rica, on november the 29th, 1970. He was raised in Zapote and later, at 11 along with his family he moved to San Francisco de Dos Ríos. His self-taught musical carrer started at 7, when his father brought home the first guitar. At 8 he began to play the recorder, due to a scholar course requiring to learn it. By intuition he, and his brother Rodrigo, began to study music with books and playing by ear, either in recorder or guitar. At 17, his contact with the music of the Andean countries leads him to study the quena (andean flute), the charango and the zampoña (panflute). However, it was until 1990 that he took formal studies during a year, in the School of Music Arts of the University of Costa Rica, studying part of the career of Musical Composition. Besides, within this time he took piano and singing courses and he participated as a tenor in the Choir of the School, touring several places and stages along the country. That same year he got his first concert flute, which he began to study by himself. A year later, he took personal classes of jazz by 6 months with Tomás Díaz. In 1994 he joins the experimental band Azul Profundo (Deep Blue) working for 6 years with them. At the begininng he was playing the flute, guitar, singing and some keyboards, but later he included the whistle and the Scottish Highland Bagpipes, instruments that he began study since 1996. In 1997 he began his Uillean Pipes (Irish Bagpipe) studies. Due a craving they had, Eduardo and his brother Rodrigo, in 2001, founded Peregrino Gris, with the objective to create a project of instrumental music, that emphasized a lot the use of European old instruments, and whose main specialty was the folk music of the called “Celtic” countries. Besides the work with Peregrino Gris, project in which he even has composed some tunes, Eduardo has participated in music recordings for Theater, recorded for different artists, and has been invited as a performing artist on some concerts. At present he lives in Concepción of San Rafael of Heredia.

Rodrigo was born in San José, Costa Rica, on september the 24th, 1969, Since he was a child he was attracted to music, but it was only until his 8 years that he had his first guitar, a gift from his father. With his brother Eduardo he began to learn the first chords and playing by ear some songs.. On that years, one of his cousins had an organ at home. Rodrigo, each time he came to visit, was very attracted the keys y was able to play melodies by ear. Alter some years, with that visits he learned to play chords and taught himself to play with both hands. At 15, he componed his first song with the guitar and at the same time he knew of electronic music, made mainly with keyboards (synthesizers), then he began to dream in having his own keyboard. It was until 1987 that their father gave them precisely a synthesizer, the passion for the keys grew and a new one was coming: composition, because with the keyboard he began to create his own music. In 1990 he was part of a rock band as keyboardist and after that experience he began to compose more often, either songs or instrumentals. In 1993, he became part of a band called Azul Profundo, in which he was keyboardist, guitarist, singer and the main composer and arranger until 2000. That same year he received a present form his brother: an accordion. In 2001, Rodrigo and Eduardo founded Peregrino Gris, a project in which the main work is to create original music and where Rodrigo´s compositions take their space, being the main composer until today. That year began the experience composing music for theater plays, commercial jingles and music for video an audio-classes, besides he began to develop himself as an sound engineer, making several recordings under his responsibility, including the Peregrino Gris’ CDs. His musical studies have never been formal, but he have been learning technic, reading, harmony and even orchestration principle either with occasional classes or books. Rodrigo has recorded, played and even arranged as a guest musician in several projects and occasionally he plays on a piano and saxophone duo. He lives with his wife in San Juan Sur, a town at the mountains between Desamparados and Cartago, the place where now all his compositions born.
